Carriage bolts - the sturdy choice for industrial connections

2025-07-22

Carriage bolts

Carriage Bolts are a common fastener, which is characterized by a round head with one or more grooves in the middle for mounting nuts or other fasteners. This design allows the carriage bolt to be easily embedded in the pre-drilled hole during installation and tightened by rotating the nut. Due to the special shape of its head, the carriage bolt is not easy to loosen after installation, so it has been widely used in various mechanical and building structures.

Characteristics of Carriage Bolt

Head design: The head of the carriage bolt is round, without a cross slot or hexagon socket, which can be used as a tool-aiding design, which can play a role in preventing theft during the actual connection process.

Anti-rotation function: During installation, the square neck of the carriage bolt will be stuck in the slot, preventing the bolt from rotating, but allowing it to move parallel to the slot.

Industry Standard for Carriage Bolts

Chinese National Standard

GB/T 14: Corresponding to German standard DIN603, used for large semicircular head carriage bolts. Such as large semicircular head square neck bolts specified in GB/T 14-1988, GB/T 14-2013 flat round head square neck bolts, GB/T 14-1998 large semicircular head square neck bolts, GB 14-1976 large semicircular head square neck bolts.

GB/T 12-85: used for small semicircular head carriage bolts.

GB 12: specifies semicircular head square neck bolts with thread specifications of M6-M20 and product grade C.

GB 801: The standard for low square neck bolts, specifies semicircular head square neck bolts with thread specifications of M6-M20 and product grade C.

German Standard

DIN603: It is a standard issued by the German National Standards Organization (DIN), which specifies the size, tolerance, material and performance requirements of carriage bolts. Applicable to bolts for fixing and fastening in carriages, railway vehicles, industrial and mining vehicles, and other machinery and equipment. This standard specifies the dimensions and tolerances of the hexagonal head, square neck, and other parts of the carriage bolts, materials (usually carbon steel or stainless steel, etc.), performance requirements (including mechanical performance indicators such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and physical performance indicators such as hardness and corrosion resistance), and surface treatment (such as black oxidation, galvanizing, etc.), and divides carriage bolts into different product grades according to performance requirements and material grades, such as 10.9 and 12.9.

International Standard

ISO898-1: The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) stipulates in this standard that the mechanical performance requirements of carriage bolts are divided into 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9 grades. Among them, grade 8.8 means the minimum tensile strength is 800MPa and the minimum yield strength is 640MPa; grade 10.9 means the minimum tensile strength is 1000MPa and the minimum yield strength is 900MPa; grade 12.9 means the minimum tensile strength is 1200MPa and the minimum yield strength is 1080MPa3.

American Standards

ASME/ANSI B18.5(T6) - 2012: American large round head step bolts [Table6], ASME/ANSI B18.5 - 2008 large round head carriage bolts Table6, ASME B18.5(T6) - 2012(2017) American large round head step bolts [Table6], etc. are all related American carriage bolt standards.

Typical application scenarios

Vehicle manufacturing and maintenance

In the field of vehicle manufacturing and maintenance, carriage bolts are widely used for the connection and fixation of frames, wheels, axles and other parts. For example, the wheel hub and the axle need to be fastened with carriage bolts to ensure the stability and safety of vehicle driving.

Machinery manufacturing industry

In the machinery manufacturing industry, carriage bolts are used to fix and connect various mechanical parts, such as bearings, gears, pulleys, etc. By using carriage bolts, the stability and precision of each component in the mechanical equipment can be ensured, and the performance and service life of the equipment can be improved.

Construction field

In the construction field, carriage bolts are used to fix various building components, such as steel structures, concrete structures, etc. Their high load-bearing capacity and durability ensure the stability and safety of the building.

Industrial manufacturing

In modern industrial production, carriage bolts still play an important role. They are widely used in chemical enterprises, papermaking enterprises, rubber enterprises, petrochemical enterprises, water conservancy projects and other fields. The high strength and high precision of carriage bolts make them ideal for connecting and fixing various industrial equipment and structures.

Advantages of Carriage Bolts

Anti-rotation design: The unique design of the carriage bolt includes a square neck that can be embedded in the corresponding square hole during installation, effectively preventing the bolt from rotating when subjected to force. This anti-rotation design ensures the stability of the connection and is particularly suitable for occasions where the bolt needs to be prevented from loosening.

Anti-theft properties: Since the head of the carriage bolt does not have a traditional slot design (such as a cross slot or hexagon socket), it has a certain degree of anti-theft function. Ordinary screwdrivers cannot easily turn this type of bolt, so carriage bolts are an ideal choice for occasions where unauthorized disassembly needs to be prevented.

Aesthetics: The round head design of the carriage bolt is simple and smooth, suitable for use in occasions where exposed bolts are required. This design is not only practical, but also can enhance the overall aesthetics of the appearance, especially favored in the furniture manufacturing and construction industries.

In summary, the carriage bolt is a fastener with a unique head design, which is widely used in multiple industries due to its anti-rotation function and anti-theft characteristics. Its materials are diverse, and the appropriate grade and treatment method can be selected according to specific needs to meet different engineering needs.
